Niger govt clarifies commissioner’s remarks on Borgu attack, says normalcy has returned

The Niger State Government has clarified comments made by the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Magaji, regarding the recent bandit attack on Pissa Community in Borgu Local Government Area, insisting that his remarks were misinterpreted in some media reports.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nuhu Nana, the government acknowledged that the community was indeed attacked by armed bandits, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property.
The government described the incident as unfortunate and extended its condolences to the affected families and residents of the community.
According to the statement, contrary to some media interpretations, Magaji’s comments were not intended to deny the occurrence of the attack. Rather, his remarks were aimed at assuring the public that prompt intervention by security agencies had brought the situation under control and restored normalcy to the area.
The state government disclosed that following the attack, security operatives, working alongside local authorities and community stakeholders, responded swiftly to contain the situation, prevent further casualties, and stop the spread of criminal activities to neighbouring communities.

It added that security presence has since been strengthened in the affected area, while surveillance and intelligence-led operations are ongoing across vulnerable locations within the state.
The government reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity and supporting security agencies with the resources and coordination necessary to protect lives and property.
Residents were also urged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and rely on verified information from official sources.
Reaffirming its dedication to the safety and well-being of citizens, the Niger State Government pledged to continue taking proactive measures aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security across the state.
