Court sentences man to death by hanging for murder, armed robbery in Kano

A High Court in Kano State has sentenced Abdulaziz Umar to death by hanging after finding him guilty of killing Mubarak Salisu.
Umar, said to be a resident of Fagge Quarters in Kano, was convicted on two counts—armed robbery and culpable homicide—following a trial that established his involvement in the crime.
Delivering the judgment, Zuwaira Yusuf ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction and sentencing.
“I hereby sentence the convict to life imprisonment for robbery and to death by hanging for culpable homicide until he is certified dead,” she said.
Earlier, the prosecution lawyer, Aisha Salisu, told the court that the incident occurred on October 1, 2020, at Race Course in Badawa Layout, Kano.
She explained that on that day, Umar stabbed Salisu in the stomach and hand with a sharp knife during an attack at Independence Day celebrations, leading to his death.

The attacker also stole the victim’s Samsung phone.
The prosecution called five witnesses and tendered evidence to support the case against the defendant.
However, Umar denied committing the crime.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 298 and 221 of the Penal Code.
The defence lawyer, Ya’u Abdullahi, presented the defendant to testify in his own defence.
