Kano federal lawmaker, Danjuma Hassan, passes away

The House of Representatives has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Hon. Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, the lawmaker representing the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State.

Hon. Hassan, a respected member of the Green Chamber and a prominent political figure from Kano State, reportedly died on Friday evening at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness.

His departure marks a significant void in the 10th National Assembly, where he was highly respected for his deep understanding of legislative procedures and governance.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

Rotimi highlighted that the late legislator was a cornerstone of the parliament, noting that “his passing is a profound loss to the House of Representatives, his constituents, and the nation at large.”

The spokesperson emphasized that Hassan’s transition leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill, given his immense dedication to the development of the country’s legal and legislative frameworks.

Hassan won his seat during the 2023 general elections under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). During his time in the House, he held the influential position of Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary.

His colleagues often looked to him for guidance on complex legal matters, as he was considered a master of his craft.

Rotimi further remarked that “with his demise, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost Legislative Counsel and Legal Draftsmen, whose contributions significantly advanced legislative development and constitutional processes.”

The late lawmaker was not a stranger to the inner workings of the National Assembly. Long before he was elected to represent his people, he served within the administrative arm of the legislature. He climbed the professional ladder within the National Assembly bureaucracy, eventually reaching the peak of his career as a Permanent Secretary.

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, has offered his condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Kano State. He described Hassan as a dedicated public servant who served his country with integrity.

Final funeral arrangements have been set for Saturday, where he will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic traditions. Reflecting on the impact of his life’s work, Rotimi added, “May his soul rest well, and may his legacy endure.”
