He later gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1997 and a Master’s degree in the same field in 2006.
Seeking further academic advancement, he obtained a PhD from the University of Khartoum in Sudan, with a research focus on Islam, colonialism, and migration among West African communities.

Professor Aliyu began his professional career at Arewa House, the Centre for Historical Research and Documentation at ABU.
Starting as a Graduate Assistant, he steadily rose through the ranks to become a Senior Research Fellow and later Director of the institution.
In addition to his research work, he served as a lecturer in the Department of History at ABU, contributing to the training of students and the advancement of historical scholarship.
