Jude Anele: Championing digital banking and economic growth in Africa

Jude Anele is a seasoned Nigerian banker with  three decades of experience spanning retail, corporate, and digital banking across Africa.

He currently serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NOVA Bank Limited, following his recent appointment approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

His career reflects a deep commitment to advancing financial services, driving digital innovation, and expanding banking access to underserved communities.

Background

Anele began his academic journey at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

He later strengthened his business and leadership skills with an Executive MBA from Lagos Business School and completed an Advanced Management Program (AMP), equipping him to lead large-scale banking operations and transformational projects.

Banking career

Anele’s career in banking began in Nigeria, where he gained experience with several top financial institutions.

He worked with Diamond Bank, Access Bank Plc, and Assurance Bank, building expertise across retail and corporate banking.

His reputation for strategic thinking and strong leadership led him to United Bank for Africa (UBA), where he took on senior roles, including Group Head of Retail Banking, as well as leadership positions in consumer and SME banking.

In these capacities, he played a key role in shaping retail banking strategies and expanding services to small and medium-sized enterprises.

Leadership roles

In 2021, Jude Anele was appointed Managing Director and CEO of UBA Cameroon. Under his leadership, the bank has been at the forefront of financial inclusion and digital banking transformation.

He has overseen initiatives that expanded access to banking services in underserved communities and supported financing for infrastructure projects critical to economic growth.

His work has earned him recognition as one of Cameroon’s top economic figures in 2024.
