CAF confirms 2027 AFCON will hold in June, July

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be staged around June and July.
The announcement was made by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a press conference held after the confederation’s executive committee (exco) meeting on Friday.
He, however, added that the exact dates for the tournament’s commencement will be announced “in due time”.
The 2027 AFCON will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
Motsepe debunked reports claiming that CAF is looking to strip the three countries of their hosting rights due to a lack of preparedness.

He described the reports as “totally unfounded”, adding that the competition will not be postponed either.
The CAF president also announced the confederation’s plans to expand the AFCON to 2028 participating teams.
AFCON currently features 24 teams, and the potential expansion will allow four additional countries to participate in every edition.
In December 2025, CAF announced that AFCON will be held every four years starting in 2028. A departure from the traditional biennial arrangement, which had held since the competition’s inception.
The confederation also announced that the continent’s football body will launch the African Nations League in 2029.
