Prof. Tukur Adamu: A lifetime of service in science, education

Professor Tukur Adamu, a distinguished scholar in public health parasitology, has assumed office as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Gusau (FUG).
Known for his deep commitment to teaching, research, and community development, Prof. Adamu has pledged to elevate the university’s academic standards while ensuring the safety and welfare of students and staff.
Background
Prof. Tukur Adamu was born on February 2, 1962, in Gurbi, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
He began his formal education at Tudun Wada Primary School, Gusau from 1969 to 1975 and proceeded to Government Secondary School, Gusau, from 1975 to 1980.
He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Zoology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1986 and 1993, respectively.
He later earned a Ph.D. in Zoology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in 1999 and 2000, laying a strong foundation for a career in academic research and university administration.
Career path
Prof. Adamu began his professional life as a fisheries officer with the Sokoto State Ministry of Agriculture in 1987.
He then joined the State College of Arts and Sciences, Sokoto, as a lecturer from 1987 to 1989.
In April 1989, he joined Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as a Graduate Assistant.
Through dedication and excellence, he rose steadily through the ranks and was appointed Professor of Parasitology in October 2005.
Leadership roles
Prof. Adamu has served in numerous academic and administrative capacities, demonstrating leadership and vision at every stage.
He has been coordinator of several departmental programs, examination officer at the School of Matriculation Studies, and head of the Microbiology and Zoology units.
He has also served as Head of the Biological Sciences Department at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science, Director of the School of Matriculation Studies, and Founding Head of the Department of Biology at ZAMSUT Talata Mafara.
He represented the Senate as a Board member at UDUTH and chaired or participated in multiple standing and ad-hoc committees.

Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Management Board of UDUS Centre for Open and Distance Education (CODE) and the UDUS Digital Learning Centre (DLC).
Milestones
An accomplished academic, Prof. Adamu is deeply involved in teaching and supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
He has initiated, conducted, and supervised over 60 postgraduate research projects and has served as an external examiner and assessor for multiple universities, including ABU Zaria, University of Abuja, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, and KSUSTA Aliero.
His research primarily focuses on public health parasitology, and he has published more than 70 papers in reputable journals.
He is a fellow and active member of several professional organizations, including the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology, Zoological Society of Nigeria, Science Association of Nigeria, and Science Teachers Association of Nigeria.
Philanthropy
Prof. Adamu’s influence extends beyond academia. He has served in key educational and advisory roles in Zamfara State, contributing to the development of institutions and policies.
He has been Rector of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara, a member of the Zamfara State Scholarship Board, and a member of the Zamfara State Science and Technical Education Board.
He has chaired both the primary and secondary education assessment committees, served on the Zamfara State University Establishment and Interim Management Committees, and chaired the Talata Mafara Emirate Education Development Committee and the Governing Council of Zamfara State College of Education, Maru.
His work in these roles has strengthened educational structures, promoted quality learning, and supported youth development across the state.
Personal life
Professor Tukur Adamu is married and blessed with children.
He continues to combine family life with his professional responsibilities, balancing research, teaching, and administration with community service.
