‘Fix Nigeria first’ – Peter Obi slams Tinubu over lingering power crisis

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and prominent ADC chieftain, Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu over the state of electricity supply and governance in the country, urging the President to focus more on solving Nigeria’s pressing problems.

Obi, known for his vocal stance on national issues, criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the power sector, arguing that millions of Nigerians are still struggling with unstable electricity years into Tinubu’s administration.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Obi called on the President to “stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” rather than prioritising other engagements.

He added, “Yet, in January 2026 alone, the national grid has already collapsed twice, and the month is not even over. Last year, it collapsed about twelve times. This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian.”

Obi highlighted the contrast with Turkey, a country of about 87 million people, roughly a third of Nigeria’s population, saying, “Yet Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles with less than 5% of that capacity. The contrast is both striking and painful.”

He also criticised what he described as misplaced priorities, urging Nigerians to focus on governance rather than just elections.

“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems. At this rate, we may soon hear of trips to Palau or Vanuatu while critical issues remain unattended at home,” Obi wrote.
