FG unveils professorial cadre allowance for university lecturers

In a significant move to support academic staff, the Federal Government has approved new annual allowances for lecturers in Nigerian universities. Under the new scheme, full-time professors will receive an additional ₦1.8 million, while full-time readers will benefit from an extra ₦870,000 each year.
This new benefit, officially termed the “professorial cadre allowance,” is specifically designed for academics holding professorial and readership positions.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Wednesday in Abuja during the presentation of the renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The federal government said the allowance forms part of broader efforts to address lecturers’ welfare following engagements with ASUU.
