Meet Joash Amupitan, newly appointed INEC Chairman

Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), a distinguished Nigerian academic and legal scholar, has officially been appointed as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the completion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure in October 2025.
His appointment, which was confirmed by the National Council of State and announced by Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Background
Professor Amupitan hails from Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Known for his discipline and strong moral values, he has spent over three decades contributing to Nigeria’s legal education and governance through a blend of academic brilliance and professional excellence.
He is a graduate of the University of Jos, where he earned all his degrees, an LL.B in 1987, an LL.M in 1993, and a Ph.D. in Law in 2007.
After completing his studies, he attended the Nigerian Law School in Lagos and was called to the Bar in 1988, officially beginning his journey as a legal practitioner.
Academic and Professional career
Amupitan began his academic career at the University of Jos in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer.
Through dedication and hard work, he rose steadily through the ranks to become a Reader in 2003 and a Professor of Law in 2008.
His contributions to research, teaching, and university administration have earned him respect within the academic community.

A distinguished scholar, Professor Amupitan specializes in Corporate Law, Corporate Governance, Law of Evidence, and Privatization Law.

Throughout his career, he has held several key positions, including Head of the Department of Public Law, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
He has also served as a member of the Governing Council of the University of Jos and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS).
Recognitions
In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the legal profession and academia, Professor Amupitan was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014, one of the highest honors for legal practitioners in the country.
Beyond his work at the University of Jos, Amupitan served as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), where he provided leadership and improved institutional governance.
Research and academic contributions
A prolific researcher, Professor Amupitan has published over 50 scholarly works, including journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers.
He has supervised 13 Ph.D. and M.Phil candidates and more than 30 Master’s students, many of whom now hold influential positions in academia and the legal profession.

Professor Amupitan is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Yemisi Amupitan, and they are blessed with four children.
