Remembering Somtochukwu Maduagwu: A life of brilliance cut short

Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie, was a Nigerian lawyer, journalist, model, and news anchor with Arise News (Arise TV).
Renowned for her brilliance, elegance, and versatility, she carved out a promising career before her tragic passing at just 29.
Birth
Born on December 26, 1995, in London, Sommie was the first of three children.
Her father hailed from Anambra State while her mother is from Delta State.
Though born abroad, she spent much of her childhood in Nigeria, partly growing up in Port Harcourt.
She initially pursued a degree in Business Economics overseas but soon realized it was not her true calling. Encouraged by her mother, she switched to studying Law, a choice that aligned with her passion for justice and public service.
Returning to Nigeria, she attended the Nigerian Law School, Abuja campus, and was subsequently called to the Bar.
Career Journey
Sommie built a multifaceted career that reflected her versatility and passion for impact.
As a lawyer and political consultant, she offered valuable insights in legal and policy-related matters.
Her media career blossomed at Arise TV, where she worked as a journalist, producer, and news anchor in Abuja.

She became known for her engaging coverage of legal, political, and social-impact issues, earning recognition in Nigeria’s media space.
Before her breakthrough in mainstream media, she contributed thought-provoking lifestyle and empowerment articles to BellaNaija and other platforms.

Beyond journalism, she explored modeling, with her first paid shoot taking place at Millennium Park in Abuja.

She also ventured briefly into fashion entrepreneurship, attempting to launch a clothing line for corporate women.
Though the business ended after a year due to operational challenges, it showcased her entrepreneurial spirit.
Personal life
Despite her visibility, Sommie lived a largely private and controversy-free life.
She was admired for her warmth, vibrance, and authenticity.

A lover of fashion, makeup, romantic comedies, and 90s R&B music, she carried her passions into her personal and professional life with grace.
Death
On September 29, 2025, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu’s life was cut short in an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. She was only 29 years old.
Her shocking and untimely death sparked widespread grief across Nigeria, particularly within media, legal, and social circles.
Legacy
Though her journey was brief, Sommie’s brilliance, elegance, and commitment to excellence continue to inspire.
She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, creativity, and purpose that will not be forgotten.
