7 things to know about Oba Rashidi Ladoja, 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland

Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is the newly crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He officially ascended the throne on September 26, 2025, a day after his 81st birthday, succeeding the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
Beyond royalty, Ladoja has lived a remarkable life as a politician, businessman, and community leader.
Here are seven key things to know about him:
1. Background
Ladoja was born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari, Ibadan.
He studied at Ibadan Boys High School and Olivet Baptist High School before proceeding to the University of Liège in Belgium, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering.
2. Early Career
He began his professional journey with Total Nigeria, where he worked for 13 years, before venturing into private business in 1985.

3. Business Ventures
His business interests cut across shipping, manufacturing, agriculture, banking, and transportation, making him a notable figure in the private sector.
4. Political Career
Ladoja entered politics in 1992 and was elected Senator representing Oyo South under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
He later became Governor of Oyo State in 2003 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Though impeached in 2006, the Supreme Court reinstated him, allowing him to complete his term in 2007.
5. Party Movement
Over the years, he moved between several parties including PDP, Accord Party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). He also made unsuccessful governorship bids in 2011 and 2015.
6. Family
Oba Ladoja comes from the Otun royal lineage of Ibadan. He is married to Bolatito Ladoja and practices Islam faithfully.
7. Ascension to the throne
In 2024, he was decorated with a beaded crown, marking his recognition as a traditional ruler.
Following the passing of Oba Olakulehin in July 2025, he was chosen as the next Olubadan and crowned on September 26, 2025, at Mapo Hall, Ibadan.
