DSS brokers peace as NUPENG suspends strike against Dangote Refinery

Nigeria narrowly avoided a nationwide fuel crisis after the Department of State Services (DSS) stepped in to resolve the standoff between the Dangote Refinery and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

The breakthrough came during a closed-door meeting at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, where officials brokered talks between both parties. After the discussions, NUPENG’s leadership directed its members to suspend the strike action, which had threatened to disrupt fuel distribution across the country.

At the meeting were top government officials, including the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. The Dangote Refinery team was led by Sayyu Dantata.

Labour leaders were also in attendance, among them Mr. Akpouha Williams of NUPENG, Mr. Benson Upah representing the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Dr. N.A. Toro of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
