Israel threatens to destroy Gaza city as ceasefire talks falter

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz has warned that Gaza City will be destroyed unless Hamas agrees to disarm and release all hostages, raising fears of a devastating new escalation in the nearly two-year-long war.

The warning followed the Israeli cabinet’s approval of plans for a massive assault on Gaza City, despite mounting opposition both at home and abroad.

International mediators have urged restraint, warning of catastrophic humanitarian consequences if Israel proceeds with a full-scale offensive.

On Monday, Hamas said it had accepted a ceasefire proposal brokered by Qatar and Egypt, which would allow for a 60-day truce and the release of half of the remaining hostages.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the deal, insisting that negotiations must secure the release of all hostages and achieve an end to the conflict on terms “acceptable to Israel.”

Israel estimates that of the 50 hostages still in Gaza, only about 20 are believed to be alive after 22 months of fighting.

Israeli media reported that officials are preparing to send negotiators for renewed talks once a location is agreed upon, suggesting that despite Katz’s stark warning, diplomatic channels remain open.

The developments highlight the fragile balance between military pressure and negotiation as Israel pushes for total disarmament of Hamas while mediators seek a pathway to halt the bloodshed.
