Background
Born on March 3, 1957, in the bustling Agarawu area of Lagos Island, K1 De Ultimate is a native of Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.
From the age of eight, K1 displayed a deep passion for music, often performing at local events despite his parents’ initial disapproval.
Determined to follow his dream, he honed his talent and, by the time he turned 15, had already won several local music competitions.
In 1975, K1 began his professional journey when he joined the legendary Fuji pioneer, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, as a helper carrying musical instruments.
Impressed by his dedication, Barrister later made him a full member of the Supreme Fuji Commanders.
With his mentor’s blessing, he adopted “Ayinde” into his name, a symbolic mark of succession in the Fuji tradition.
Rise to Fame and Fuji Revolution
K1’s first album, Iba, was released in 1980, but it was his 1984 breakthrough, Talazo ’84, that redefined the Fuji sound.
His style, known as Talazo Fuji, blended traditional rhythms with modern instrumentation, making the genre appealing to both older listeners and younger, urban audiences across Nigeria.

Over the decades, K1 has taken Fuji music beyond Nigerian borders, performing in prestigious venues in the UK, US, Canada, and Europe.
His career highlights include being the first Fuji artist to perform at the WOMAD Festival, as well as sold-out shows at venues like the Hammersmith Town Hall in London and SOB’s in New York.
Family
K1 is a known polygamist and proud father of 38 children from different relationships.
Over the years, he has been legally married to a few of his wives, including Yewande, who resides in Canada with her children.

While his family life has occasionally stirred public conversation, he has remained unapologetic about his lifestyle, citing cultural and personal beliefs.
Achievements
K1 holds numerous traditional and national honors.
He was crowned King of Fuji Music in 1993 and later honored as the Mayegun of Yorubaland in 2020 by the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
In September 2023, he was installed as Olori Omooba of Akile Ijebuland by the Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
He is also a recipient of the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022.

His musical excellence has earned him numerous awards, including The Headies Hall of Fame (2013) and the City People Lifetime Achievement Award (2014).
Controversies
On August 5, 2025, K1 made headlines for reasons outside of music.
Scheduled to board a ValueJet flight from Abuja to Lagos, he was stopped by aviation security for carrying a flask suspected to contain alcohol, a prohibited item onboard Nigerian flights.
K1 insisted the flask contained only water, prescribed for his chronic dehydration.
Reports alleged that during the heated exchange, he poured the contents on a crew member and security officials before walking onto the tarmac and standing in front of the aircraft, preventing it from taxiing.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended two pilots involved in the incident for taxiing without confirming that K1 had been cleared from the aircraft’s path.
Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo described K1’s actions as akin to a “hostage situation” and ordered his name placed on a temporary no-fly list pending investigation.
On August 8, 2025, K1 issued a public statement calling the incident “unfortunate” and maintaining that the flask contained only water.
He expressed regret to the Presidency, the Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, and Nigerians at large.
Albums
Despite controversies, K1’s influence on Nigerian music is undeniable.
He has released over 50 studio albums and numerous live recordings, including classics like Esi Oro (1981), Consolidation (1995), Fuji The Sound (2020), and Timeless Fuji (2023).
He remains a symbol of Fuji’s global appeal, blending tradition with innovation while mentoring the next generation of Fuji artists.
Net worth
With a career spanning nearly five decades, K1 has built an estimated net worth of $5 million through album sales, live performances, traditional titles, endorsements, and business ventures.
He owns luxury properties in Nigeria, a resort in Ijebu Ode, and a fleet of high-end cars.
His brand, Fuji Repete, continues to generate revenue through music publishing and concerts.
