Background

Born on November 12, 1966, Nenadi Usman hails from Kaduna State in northern Nigeria.

Her foundational education began in Jos and later Kagoro, after which she attended the prestigious Federal Government College, Jos, Plateau State.

Her academic pursuit led her to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Geography.

She also holds a postgraduate diploma from the University of Jos, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and capacity building.

Early career

Usman’s professional career began in the private sector, where she served as Managing Director of Dana Ventures.

By the early 1990s, she had transitioned into public service, taking up the role of Executive Adviser in Kaduna State in 1992.

She continued in that capacity through 1993 and went on to serve as the Principal Personnel Officer at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) from 1994 to 1998.

These formative roles laid the groundwork for her deeper involvement in public administration and policy-making.

Political career

Usman’s political journey began during Nigeria’s short-lived Third Republic. She was an active member of the Kaduna State caucus of the National Republican Convention (NRC).

In 1998, she was elected under the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) to represent the Kachia/Kagarko Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, though the tenure was truncated due to political transitions.

With the return to democracy in 1999, she was appointed as a commissioner in Kaduna State.

She served in various portfolios, including Commissioner for the Environment and Natural Resources and later Commissioner for Health between 1999 and 2003.

During this period, she also took on pivotal roles in political campaigns, notably serving as the coordinator for Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi’s gubernatorial campaigns and leading the Kaduna State campaign for President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003.

National recognition as Minister of Finance

In recognition of her leadership and expertise, Usman was appointed Minister of State for Finance during President Obasanjo’s second term and later promoted to the substantive position of Minister of Finance in July 2006, succeeding Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

She served in that capacity until May 2007, during which she helped steer Nigeria’s financial and economic policy at a time of reform and global engagement.

Senator for Kaduna south

In April 2011, Nenadi Usman was elected to the Nigerian Senate, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Personal life

A devoted Muslim, Senator Usman was married to the late Dr. Sa’ad Usman, the Emir of Jere in Kaduna State, who passed away in March 2020 at the age of 70, following complications from a spinal cord condition.

Together, they had four children. Despite personal loss, she has continued to maintain a visible presence in national discourse and public service

Recent appointment

In July 2025, Nenadi Usman made a political comeback when she was unanimously elected as the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) by the party’s National Executive Committee.
