NUJ FCT revives press clubs in Abuja secondary schools to groom future journalists

In a strategic move to raise a new generation of ethical and professional media practitioners, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has launched a renewed initiative to revive and strengthen press clubs in secondary schools across Abuja.
The announcement was made during an interactive session held at Government Secondary School (GSS), Garki, as part of the ongoing 2025 NUJ Press Week.

Speaking on behalf of the Council, Comrade Yahaya Ndababo, Vice Chairman of NUJ FCT, emphasized the importance of introducing students to the core values of journalism at an early stage. According to him, instilling journalistic ethics in young minds is key to building a more responsible and vibrant media landscape in the future.

He said “Our goal is to promote professionalism from the grassroots by empowering students with journalistic skills and values early on”

Marking a significant step, the union has slated Thursday, 24th July 2025, as the official launch date for the Press Club Revival Project, beginning with two pilot schools.
Yahaya said this part of effort to bring up future generations to promote ethical journalism.

Representing GSS Garki’s leadership, Matron of the Press Club Mrs. Udofia Emauwa Unyime warmly welcomed the initiative, calling it a “timely and visionary effort” that will ignite students’ passion for journalism.
This initiative forms a cornerstone of the 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week, which will feature activities championing press freedom, media development, and civic responsibility, aiming to build an inclusive, grassroots journalism culture across the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
