What could have ended in tragedy was narrowly averted on Friday afternoon thanks to the swift intervention of officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos State.

According to an official statement shared on the RRS’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. during a routine patrol near Carter Bridge, one of Lagos’s busiest connections between the mainland and island.

The officers noticed an elderly woman exhibiting signs of distress and moving dangerously close to the edge of the bridge. Acting quickly, the RRS team rushed to the scene and successfully prevented her from jumping into the lagoon.

She was escorted to the RRS Headquarters, where Commander CSP Shola Jejeloye spoke with her in an effort to understand the circumstances that led to the incident.

Police reported that the woman, her husband, and their 30-year-old son were offered a private setting to hold a family discussion aimed at resolving their underlying issues. Following the conversation, CSP Jejeloye provided her with words of encouragement and a monetary gift as part of the squad’s support.

The family thanked the officers for their intervention and compassion. The woman was later released into the care of her husband and son.
