Tragedy was narrowly averted on Sunday as the team bus carrying officials of Abakaliki FC, the runners-up of the 2025 President Federation Cup, was involved in a road accident while en route to Ebonyi State from Lagos.

The unfortunate incident occurred along the Benin-Ore expressway, near Ondo State, during the team’s return journey after their historic performance in the Federation Cup final.

According to a statement shared on the club’s official Facebook page, the accident happened when the team bus reportedly suffered a brake failure and collided with a moving truck. The impact caused panic among the occupants, most of whom were members of the team’s management and support staff.

The crash came less than a day after the team’s narrow 4-3 defeat to Kwara United in a penalty shootout during the final held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

In its update, the club assured fans and the public that there were no casualties or injuries.

“To God be the glory, no injury and no life was lost.

“On our way back from Lagos after our yesterday’s President Federation Cup finals to Ebonyi State today (29/6/2025), one of our vehicles (official’s bus) failed brake along Ondo express highway and hit a moving truck at the back.

“We thank God, we all are safe and sound.
“To God be the glory!” the statement read.
