NiMet forecasts mixed weather with thunderstorms across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting a combination of sunny conditions and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In its latest update released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet stated that most parts of the country will enjoy clear skies on Sunday morning. However, thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening, particularly in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa States.
For the North-Central region, NiMet predicts predominantly sunny weather, with chances of scattered thunderstorms later in the day affecting areas such as Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi States.
The agency advises residents in the affected areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially as thunderstorm activity could lead to temporary disruptions in travel, flooding, and strong winds.
In the southern regions, morning thunderstorms are likely in Cross River, Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States, with isolated storms expected later in the day.
“On Monday, sunny skies with patches of cloud are expected in the northern region, with chances of morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa States.
“Isolated thunderstorms are forecasted for the afternoon or evening in parts of Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa States.
“In the North-central region, sunny skies with some cloud are expected, with isolated thunderstorms possible over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Plateau States.

“Southern regions will see morning thunderstorms in Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the day.”
For Tuesday, NiMet anticipates mostly sunny skies with occasional clouds in the northern areas, alongside isolated thunderstorms during the morning in parts of Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa States.
Later in the day, thunderstorms are predicted in sections of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States.
The North-central region will experience sunny weather with some clouds and isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon or evening across the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Benue, and Niger States.
“The southern region will experience morning thunderstorms in Cross River, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States, with thunderstorms expected later in the day.”
NiMet has issued a safety advisory urging the public to remain cautious, as strong winds may accompany thunderstorms. Residents are encouraged to secure loose items to avoid damage.
“It also urges residents to avoid driving under heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay clear of tall trees to avoid falling branches.
“Airline operators are encouraged to consult NiMet for specific weather reports to assist in flight planning.”
