His academic journey began in Lagos at the Progressive Institute, Agege, where he studied from 1969 to 1973.
He then pursued advanced Arabic and Islamic studies at the Arabic Training Centre (Markaz) in Agege from 1973 to 1976.
He later obtained a Certificate in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Ibadan in 1977, followed by a B.A. in Arabic from the University of Ilorin in 1981.
He joined the University of Ilorin as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Religions in 1982, completed his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies in 1991, and became a full professor in 1995.
His scholarly contributions have spanned decades, covering areas of Islamic jurisprudence, interfaith dialogue, and educational development.
Early career
In 2007, Oloyede made history as the first alumnus of the University of Ilorin to serve as its Vice Chancellor.

His five-year tenure witnessed a remarkable boost in the institution’s reputation, making it one of the top-ranked universities in Africa and the most sought-after in Nigeria.
Beyond his university, he served as Chairman of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, President of the Association of African Universities, and Deputy Chair of the International Association of Universities Governing Board.
He was also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities and Pro-Chancellor of Fountain University, Osogbo.
National service
Oloyede’s service to the nation extends beyond the classroom. In 2005, he co-secretaried the National Political Reform Conference under President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He later served as Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and, since 2013, has been the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
Transforming JAMB
In 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Professor Oloyede as the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB.
His appointment marked a turning point in the board’s history. Under his leadership, JAMB underwent a complete digital transformation, enhancing transparency and efficiency in its operations.
He introduced the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) to support candidates with disabilities and launched the nine-key computer-based testing model for ease of access.
Most notably, Oloyede turned JAMB into a model of fiscal responsibility. While the board had previously remitted a mere ₦50 million to the federal treasury in nearly 40 years, it remitted ₦7.8 billion in his first year alone.
To date, the board has remitted over ₦20.7 billion to the government under his administration.
Recognitions
A fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (FNAL), the Nigerian Institute of Management, and the Academy of Entrepreneurship, Oloyede is also affiliated with various national and international scholarly bodies, including the Islamic Academy of Cambridge and the Nigerian Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies (NATAIS).
In a special tribute for his 70th birthday, President Bola Tinubu commended Oloyede for his exceptional leadership, noting that he has “brought credibility and transparency to the nation’s examination and admission processes.”
