Reps urge FG to subsidise cancer treatment, expand access to care nationwide

In a compassionate move aimed at addressing Nigeria’s rising cancer mortality rate, the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to subsidise the cost of cancer medications and treatment services across the country.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, lawmakers stressed the urgent need to ease the financial burden on cancer patients, many of whom struggle to afford life-saving care.
They also advocated for the provision of free cancer screening nationwide, emphasizing early detection as a key to improving survival rates.

The House further urged the government to increase the number of functional treatment centres and radiotherapy machines to boost access to quality cancer care.
The resolution followed a motion highlighting the alarming rate of cancer-related deaths in Nigeria and the pressing challenges faced by patients in accessing timely and affordable medical services.
