Early life
Obey was born on April 3, 1942, in Idogo, Ogun State, into Egba-Yoruba heritage and the Owu clan specifically.
Raised in the heart of Yoruba tradition, he developed a deep appreciation for culture and language, elements that would later define his music.
Music career
His musical journey began in the 1950s after moving to Lagos. He apprenticed under the legendary Fatai Rolling-Dollar before forming The International Brothers in 1964.
The band later evolved into The Inter-Reformers, a group that brought innovation to the juju genre by infusing it with more percussive depth, electric guitars, and talking drums.

Obey’s true genius lies in his ability to craft rich, meaningful compositions laced with Yoruba proverbs, wisdom, and praise-singing.
His music appealed not just to the masses but also to Nigeria’s elite, business moguls, and religious communities.
In the early 1990s, Obey transitioned into gospel music, dedicating his voice and platform to Christian ministry.

He became known for powerful spiritual messages wrapped in melody, and collaborated with fellow gospel artists like Pastor Kunle Ajayi during landmark celebrations, including Ajayi’s 30th-anniversary concert in Lagos.
Family
In 1963, Obey married Juliana Olaide Olufade, later known as Lady Evangelist Juliana Obey-Fabiyi.
Their marriage was blessed with children and grandchildren, and remained strong until her passing in 2011 at the age of 67.
