Tragedy in Abuja as multiple fatalities reported in Karu Bridge truck crash

A tragic accident unfolded on Friday at the Karu Bridge in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as a heavy-duty truck lost control and collided with multiple vehicles, leading to what eyewitnesses described as a scene of devastation and loss.
According to local accounts, the truck—laden with cement—was descending the steep Kugbo hill when it reportedly suffered brake failure. With no means to stop, it veered uncontrollably into oncoming traffic, crushing several vehicles in its path.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the crash as horrific, with mangled cars, injured victims, and an atmosphere of chaos and panic. Several lives were reportedly lost, although the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed by authorities.
“The driver of the ill-fated truck reportedly took to his heels in the process ìn an attempt to escape after he had sensed danger of possible mob attack after the similar incident that led to the death of many people.”“But luck ran out on him when the commercial motorcyclists near Karu Roundabout apprehended the truck driver in the process,” one witness said.

The incident caused a severe traffic jam in the area as sympathisers gathered and officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived to manage the scene and assist the injured.
The accident has drawn comparisons to a similar recent incident on the same Karu Bridge, where a Dangote trailer powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) also lost its brakes, collided with multiple vehicles, and led to a significant number of deaths.
As of the time of reporting, the exact number of casualties in Friday’s crash could not be independently confirmed.
