Background

Born into a polygamous family in Kano on December 24, 1974, Eedris’s roots trace back to Osun State through his father and Ogun State via his mother.

Despite his southwestern heritage, he adopted Kano as his home state. His childhood was marked by hardship—he lost his father when he was just two years old and eventually lost eight of his elder siblings.

Rise to fame

Eedris burst onto the music scene in the late 1990s with ‘The Remedies’ helping to popularize Nigerian hip-hop by fusing local dialects with modern beats.

After the group dissolved in 2002, each member pursued solo ventures. That same year, Eedris launched his solo career with the album P.A.S.S (Pain And Stress = Success).

His follow-up, Mr. Lecturer, boldly tackled issues such as sexual harassment in Nigerian institutions, reinforcing his reputation as a socially conscious artist.

The release of Jaga Jaga in 2004 marked a turning point. The album’s title track delivered a scathing critique of corruption and governance failures in Nigeria.

Despite being banned from airplay by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo, the song resonated with the masses and became a cultural anthem.

Controversies

In 2004, Eedris was involved in a high-profile altercation with American rapper 50 Cent at Murtala Muhammed Airport. The conflict allegedly stemmed from a dispute over seating arrangements.

The fallout led to 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew canceling their tour. In response, Abdulkareem released Letter to Mr. President, a song that touched on not only the incident but also broader themes of injustice and foreign exploitation.

He returned to the spotlight in June 2024 with his single ‘Emi Lokan’.

However, Abdulkareem clarified that the song was actually a response to Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, who had described his father as “Nigeria’s best-ever leader.”

More recently, Eedris dropped another politically charged song titled ‘Tell Your Papa’, which again faced an NBC broadcast ban. This time, the situation drew international attention.

His activism also includes his active participation in the EndSARS protests against police brutality.

Personal life

Eedris has been married to Yetunde Abdulkareem since 2004, and they have three children.

In 2022, he faced a life-threatening health scare that required a kidney transplant.

His wife’s courageous decision to donate her kidney saved his life, a gesture he described as both surprising and deeply moving.

Net worth

Eedris Abdulkareem is currently estimated to have a net worth of $1 million, earned through music, performances, advocacy, and brand deals.
