Born on August 24, 1977, in Lagos, Akindele is the second of three children in a Yoruba family.
Her mother worked as a medical doctor, while her father was a retired school principal. Raised in a disciplined environment, she was exposed early to a balance of academic excellence and cultural grounding.
She began her education at Grace Children’s School in Gbagada before earning a Diploma in Mass Communication from what is now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. She later pursued a Law degree at the University of Lagos.
Acting career
Funke Akindele first gained national attention in 1998 through the United Nations Population Fund-backed sitcom ‘I Need to Know’, portraying the character of Bisi, a bright and curious teenager.
However, her defining moment came in 2008 with the release of the film ‘Jenifa’. The comedy-drama showcased her exceptional acting range and won her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2009.
Her iconic role was reprised in the sequel The Return of Jenifa in 2011 and later evolved into the beloved television series Jenifa’s Diary in 2015. This series became a staple in Nigerian households and contributed greatly to her fame.
