Kebbi revives dormant sports tournaments to empower youths, promote unity

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has announced the revival of long-abandoned sports tournaments across the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development through sports.
The initiative, according to the governor, aims to enhance the mental and physical well-being of young people, promote healthy living, foster economic opportunities, and strengthen social unity.
Governor Idris made this declaration during the grand finale of the Governor’s Cup Football Competition, which featured teams from all 21 Local Government Areas of the state. The final match, held at the FIFA-standard Stadium in Bulasa, near Birnin Kebbi, saw Yauri Local Government Area emerge victorious after defeating Argungu LG 2–1.
Yauri LG not only lifted the coveted trophy but also received a cash prize of N1 million, marking a significant achievement in the reinvigorated grassroots sports initiative. The governor emphasized that sports would remain a key part of his administration’s efforts to empower the youth and build a more united Kebbi State.
The runners-up, Argungu LG won the silver medal and N750,000 cash reward while Jega defeated Zuru LG to clinch the 3rd position with bronze medal and N500,000 cash reward.

The Special Guest, Governor Nasir Idris who also received merit award on Sports Development, gave an assurance that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to develop the sector and encourage sporting activities.
“I have heard that the just concluded football competition among local government areas has not been held for a very long time until the advent of my administration”,
“This to assure our teeming sports lovers and admirers that the tournament will be staged annually and progressively while other sporting activities will also receive proper attention”,
“The government will encourage our youths, young sportsmen and women to be actively involved in sports for their wellbeing and economic prosperity”,
The Kebbi State NFA Chairman, Abubakar Cika Ladan commended Governor Nasir Idris for reviving the competition, by providing the necessary moral and material support, last held 20 years ago.
