Background

Born into a Muslim family on January 8, 1965, Kyari’s journey began in Maiduguri where he spent his formative years.

He attended Government Community Secondary School in Biu, Borno State, from 1977 to 1982.

He later pursued a degree in geology and earth science at the University of Maiduguri, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 1987.

This academic foundation laid the groundwork for his distinguished career in the oil and gas industry.

Career milestones

Kyari’s career took off in 1991 when he joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), where he initially worked as a Processing Geophysicist at Integrated Data Services Limited.

His career quickly progressed, and by 1998, he was serving as an Exploration Geophysicist with the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS).

In 2007, Kyari’s expertise took him to the helm of the Production Sharing Contracts Management in the Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD), a key division of NNPC.

His leadership skills were further recognized in 2014 when he became the General Manager for Crude Oil Stock Management.

By 2015, Kyari was promoted to Group General Manager of COMD, where he oversaw the complex logistics and operations related to the marketing and management of Nigeria’s crude oil resources.

One of Kyari’s notable contributions to the Nigerian oil sector was his role in the Open Government Initiative, which was instrumental in tracking the buyers and sellers of crude oil, ensuring transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s oil trade.

In 2018, Kyari was appointed as the Nigerian National Representative at the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), further solidifying his influence on a global scale.

His expertise and leadership eventually led to his appointment as the 19th Group Managing Director of NNPC, following the retirement of Maikanti Baru in July 2019.

Under his leadership, NNPC transformed into NNPC Limited, ushering in a new era of corporate governance and operational efficiency.

Recognitions

Kyari’s leadership did not go unnoticed,  in October 2022, he was awarded the prestigious national honor of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by President Muhammadu Buhari, a recognition of his outstanding service to Nigeria.

His commitment to excellence in governance was also acknowledged in April 2023 when the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria named him the Outstanding Employer of the Year 2022.

Private life

Kyari’s rise to prominence is an inspiring story, having journeyed from being an Almajiri (Tsangaya) boy to leading the NNPCL.

Despite his high-profile career, Kyari has maintained a relatively private personal life, focusing on his professional commitments and community engagement.
