11 feared dead, 295 arrested as Shiite clash with security operatives in Abuja

A violent confrontation between security forces and members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, resulted in 11 fatalities, 32 injuries, and the arrest of 295 individuals at Banex Junction, Wuse 2, Abuja.
The clash broke out around 2:20 p.m. when IMN members, reportedly armed with firearms, cutlasses, catapults, sticks, stones, and homemade petrol bombs, allegedly launched an attack on military personnel stationed at Banex along Aminu Kano Crescent.
Eyewitnesses reported that security operatives responded with force as the demonstrators allegedly opened fire and hurled projectiles, escalating the situation into a full-blown confrontation.
According to security analyst Zagozola Makama, three military personnel sustained severe injuries and were transported to the National Hospital, where one succumbed to his wounds. The other two remain under medical care.

“In response, security operatives used minimal force to disperse the protesters,” a senior officer stated. “We were able to arrest 19 suspects at the scene, while others fled in different directions.”
Following the altercation, a coordinated security operation across the capital led to the apprehension of 295 individuals. Authorities have since reinforced security around detention facilities, while the injured and deceased were taken to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
Officials have reassured residents that calm has been restored, with heightened surveillance and patrols in place to prevent further unrest.
