UK warns Iran of possible sanctions as UN security council convenes

Britain warned on Wednesday that it could push for the reimposition of United Nations sanctions on Iran if necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. The warning came as the UN Security Council met to discuss Iran’s growing stockpile of uranium enriched close to weapons-grade levels.

The UK’s representative stressed that Iran’s continued nuclear expansion was a serious violation of its international commitments and posed a threat to regional and global security.

“If Iran continues down this path, we are prepared to take all necessary measures, including triggering the snapback mechanism to restore UN sanctions,” the British envoy stated.

The Security Council meeting follows recent reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirming that Iran has significantly expanded its stock of highly enriched uranium. Western powers fear that Tehran is edging closer to the capability of building a nuclear weapon, though Iran insists its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes.

The potential return of UN sanctions would mark a major escalation in tensions between Iran and the West. The original UN sanctions were lifted after the 2015 nuclear deal, but the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, leading to Iran gradually breaching its commitments.

Diplomatic efforts to revive the nuclear deal have stalled, and Wednesday’s Security Council meeting highlighted growing international concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. It remains unclear whether Britain and its allies will move forward with the sanctions mechanism, but the warning signals a hardening stance against Tehran’s nuclear activities.
