Senate summons security chiefs over insecurity

Amid escalating concerns over insecurity, banditry, and kidnappings across Nigeria, the Senate has once again summoned all security chiefs to appear before it next week.

The high-level meeting is expected to address critical security challenges and explore urgent solutions to curb the worsening situation.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the development, noting that while the security chiefs had been invited earlier, they were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.

However, with the nation facing increasing threats from criminal elements, the Senate is pressing for immediate action and accountability from security agencies.

The Senate has also raised serious concerns over allegations that certain international agencies may be financing Boko Haram insurgency.

On February 19, 2025, security chiefs were summoned to explain allegations that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) was linked to funding Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria.

Amid escalating violence in Benue State, the Senate has called on the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Gwer-West Local Government Area.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Titus Zam (APC, Benue North-West).

Senator Zam presented a motion detailing a recent attack by armed bandits posing as herders on March 10, 2025, which resulted in four deaths.

The Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims.
