Russia launches air attack on Kyiv, Ukraine reports

Russia launched overnight air strikes on Kyiv, prompting Ukrainian air defense systems to engage in repelling the attack, Ukrainian authorities reported late on Monday.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the strikes, stating on the Telegram messaging app, “Air defence forces are working to eliminate the threat in the skies over Kyiv.”

Explosions were heard across the capital and its surrounding region, according to Reuters witnesses, in what appeared to be defensive missile systems intercepting incoming threats.

The scale of the damage and potential casualties remain unclear as Ukrainian officials assess the aftermath of the attack. This latest assault underscores the continued escalation of hostilities, with Kyiv frequently targeted in Russia’s ongoing campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Ukraine’s air defense systems have played a crucial role in countering Russian aerial assaults, particularly in urban centers. The attack on Kyiv comes amid heightened tensions and continued missile and drone strikes in various parts of the country.

Authorities have urged residents to remain in shelters during air raid alerts as the situation remains volatile.
