The Kebbi State Government has confirmed the deaths of 26 people following a suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis in Aliero, Gwandu, and Jega local government areas.

The deadly infection has raised serious health concerns in the affected communities.

Cerebrospinal meningitis is a severe illness that causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

It is often triggered by bacterial or viral infections and spreads through close contact, making outbreaks particularly dangerous in densely populated areas.

Health authorities in Kebbi State have intensified efforts to contain the spread, with medical teams deployed to provide treatment and vaccination where necessary. Residents are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, or sensitivity to light.

The state government has urged the public to take preventive measures, including maintaining good hygiene and avoiding overcrowded spaces.

Health authorities in the state have launched urgent response measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further fatalities.

Symptoms include fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. If not treated quickly, it can lead to serious complications or death.
