US President Donald Trump phoned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to wish him ahead of his 75th birthday, a gesture that comes after weeks of friction between Washington and New Delhi over tariffs.

The call followed a day of discussions in New Delhi between Indian and US officials aimed at breaking a deadlock over a trade deal.

Both sides described the talks as “positive,” raising hopes of easing tensions.

On social media platform X, Trump praised Modi’s leadership, saying the prime minister was doing a “tremendous job” and thanked him for his support on efforts to “end the Russia-Ukraine war.”

Modi, in turn, called Trump a “friend” and pledged to take the partnership “to new heights.”

It was the first direct conversation between the two leaders since Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods last month, a move that sparked unease in New Delhi.

The exchange, however, suggests both governments are seeking to reset relations as trade negotiations continue.
