Crocodile wrangler Matt Wright found guilty of obstructing justice after fatal chopper crash

Famed Australian crocodile wrangler and former Netflix star Matt Wright has been found guilty of lying to police and attempting to pressure a hospitalised witness following a helicopter crash that killed his close friend and co-star.

The 46-year-old reality television figure, best known for his role in the Outback Wrangler series, was on Friday convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice. A jury was unable to reach a verdict on a third charge.

The case stems from a 2022 crocodile egg harvesting expedition in remote Northern Territory, during which Wright’s colleague Chris “Willow” Wilson was killed. Wilson, who was suspended in a sling beneath the helicopter, died instantly when the aircraft crashed into rugged terrain. Pilot Sebastian Robinson survived but sustained serious injuries.

Prosecutors argued Wright intervened in the aftermath in an effort to shield himself from potential blame, including attempts to manipulate evidence and pressure Robinson — then recovering in hospital — about his account of the incident.

Wright, who pleaded not guilty, has consistently denied wrongdoing. His defence team insisted he acted in the best interests of friends and colleagues during a chaotic and traumatic event.

The jury’s decision, delivered on Wright’s birthday, marks a dramatic fall from grace for one of Australia’s most recognisable wildlife personalities.

Outside court, Wright’s legal representatives said they would challenge the convictions.

“Mr Wright maintains his innocence and will be appealing,” a spokesperson confirmed.

Sentencing is expected at a later date, with the outcome likely to determine whether Wright faces a custodial term.
