He attended Agogo Roman School, where his passion for music began to take root.
Even in his school days, Dede was recognized for his unique voice and flair for performance—a talent that would later transform into a lifelong vocation.
Growing up during the golden age of Ghanaian highlife, Dede was influenced by greats like E.T. Mensah, Nana Ampadu, and Osibisa, but he would go on to carve out a sound that was uniquely his.
Musical beginnings
Dede launched his professional career in 1973 when he joined the Kumapim Royals Band as a composer and vocalist.

Under the leadership of Akwasi Ampofo Agyei (AAA), the band produced classic tracks like “Ohohoo Batani,” “Abebi Bewua Eso,” and “Wanware Me A.”
His talent quickly stood out, and it wasn’t long before he ventured out on his own.
Breakthrough and solo career
Following a successful stint with the Kumapim Royals, Dede moved to Nigeria, where he recorded one of his early solo hits, “Jealousy Go Shame.”
In 1980, he formed his own band, Apollo High Kings, which played a key role in his dominance of the highlife scene throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The group became known for their electrifying live shows and a steady stream of hit songs.

Over the course of his career, Amakye Dede has released nearly 20 albums.
While he remains rooted in highlife, he has experimented with other genres including soca, calypso, lovers rock, and pop, displaying a willingness to innovate without losing his core identity.
