Sola Sobowale was born on December 26, 1965, in Ondo State, Nigeria, to Joseph and Esther Olagookun.

Her father was a retired school principal, while her mother served as a headmistress.

From a disciplined academic background, Sobowale initially pursued a degree in Music at the University of Ibadan, but her growing interest in performance led her to switch to Theatre Arts.

Her foray into acting was strongly supported by her brother-in-law, Tunji Oyelana, a respected actor, singer, and lecturer, who also facilitated her university admission and helped lay the foundation for her career.

Though her parents initially disapproved of her acting ambitions, Oyelana successfully convinced them of the profession’s value

Career beginnings

Sobowale began acting in the early 1990s, featuring in TV series such as The Village Headmaster and Mirror in the Sun, as well as the Yoruba film Asewo To Re Mecca.

She gained further experience under the Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group, led by veteran actor Adebayo Salami.

Her major breakthrough came in 2001 when she played the iconic role of Toyin Tomato in the hit Nigerian TV drama Super Story: Oh Father, Oh Daughter, which made her a national sensation.

Rise to stardom

Sola Sobowale’s versatility and screen dominance have earned her a place among Nollywood’s elite.

She has acted in more than 100 films in both Yoruba and English languages, including Sura the Tailor, Outkast (2001), Diamond Ring (1998), Dangerous Twins (2004), Disoriented Generation (2009), and Family on Fire (2011).

She has also contributed behind the scenes, producing and directing projects such as Ayomida (2003), Ayomida 2 (2003), and Ohun Oko Somid (2010), a film which also starred her mentor, Adebayo Salami.

In 2018, Sobowale delivered a career-defining performance as Eniola Salami in the political-crime thriller ‘King of Boys’, directed by Kemi Adetiba.

Her portrayal of a powerful and ruthless businesswoman-turned-politician earned her critical acclaim and won her the Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2019 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

She reprised the role in the 2021 Netflix limited series King of Boys: The Return of the King, which further solidified her legendary status in African cinema.

Other ventures

After taking a long break to raise her children in the UK, Sobowale returned to Nollywood in 2016, starring in box office hits such as The Wedding Party (2016, 2017), Gold Statue (2019), Aníkúlápó (2022), and Battle on Buka Street (2022).

In July 2022, she announced her debut in Bollywood, having been cast in an upcoming film by Indian-Nigerian director Hamisha Daryani Ahuja.

 

This marks her first international acting role outside the African continent.
