Iran’s supreme leader dismisses U.S. claims of success in nuclear strikes

In his first public address since a ceasefire agreement with Israel was reached on Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vehemently denied any success for the United States following recent airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Tehran, Khamenei dismissed the U.S. operation as an exercise in futility, insisting that the attacks “accomplished nothing significant” in disrupting Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
“The United States gained no achievements from these strikes,” Khamenei declared. “They failed to halt or delay the progress of our nuclear program.
In fact, the response from our forces was a heavy blow to American interests in the region.”
The remarks came amid rising tensions following the strikes, which were reportedly carried out by U.S. military forces in an attempt to cripple Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
The American operation targeted key nuclear sites, with the stated goal of setting back Tehran’s ability to produce nuclear materials.
However, Khamenei’s message was clear: Iran would not be deterred by foreign intervention, and its nuclear program would continue uninterrupted.
The Supreme Leader’s comments also referenced a retaliatory strike by Iran against a U.S. airbase in Qatar, which Tehran said had dealt a “serious blow” to American forces in the region. Khamenei further emphasized that the Iranian military was fully prepared to defend its sovereignty against any further attacks.
Meanwhile, the United States has stood by its assessment that the operation was successful in dealing a severe blow to Iran’s nuclear program.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed that intelligence gathered by both the U.S. and Israel showed that the strikes had “effectively destroyed key components” of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, setting back the program by “months, if not years.”
“We have crippled their ability to advance their nuclear ambitions,” Hegseth stated in a briefing to reporters.
“This operation was part of our broader strategy to ensure that Iran cannot threaten regional stability or the security of our allies.”
The diplomatic and military rhetoric between the two nations has intensified in recent weeks, with both sides making aggressive posturing as the situation in the Middle East remains volatile.
While the ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian groups has provided some respite in the region, the confrontation between the U.S. and Iran shows no signs of abating.
In Tehran, Khamenei’s speech was accompanied by expressions of defiance from other top Iranian officials. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian reiterated the country’s stance, stating that Iran would continue its nuclear program “with full transparency” and would not be swayed by external pressures.
“The U.S. has no right to dictate how we conduct our nuclear activities. We will pursue peaceful nuclear energy, as is our sovereign right,” Amir-Abdollahian said during a separate briefing.
The backdrop of the escalating U.S.-Iran tensions comes after the Iran nuclear deal—formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—has been effectively stalled for years, with neither side willing to return to the table for full negotiations.
As the global community watches the situation closely, both Washington and Tehran have signaled that the coming months could be critical in shaping the future of relations in the region, with military and diplomatic developments continuing to unfold rapidly.
