He presently takes the helm as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Background
Born on May 12, 1964, in Tihun, Bonthe District, Julius Maada Bio is the 33rd of 35 children born to Sherbro Paramount Chief Charlie Bio II.
His family background is deeply rooted in tradition, his grandfather, after whom he was named, also held the same chieftaincy title.
Raised in a devout Roman Catholic household, Bio’s early years were defined by strong discipline and academic dedication.
He attended Roman Catholic Primary School in Tihun before moving to Pujehun and later Bo School, one of Sierra Leone’s top boarding schools.
There, he rose to the position of school prefect and completed his A-levels in 1984.
Military Career and coup Leadership
After his secondary education, Bio briefly considered attending Fourah Bay College but chose to enlist in the Sierra Leone Armed Forces instead.
He trained at the Benguema Military Academy and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1987.
His military career saw him deployed to Liberia as part of the ECOMOG peacekeeping force and later brought him to the frontlines of Sierra Leone’s own civil war.
In 1992, Bio was one of six young officers who overthrew the APC-led government of President Joseph Saidu Momoh, forming the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC).
In January 1996, Bio staged another internal coup, removing then-leader Valentine Strasser, and briefly served as military Head of State.


However, just two months later, he transitioned the country to democracy, handing over power to elected civilian President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, a rare and commendable act among African military leaders.
Life in exile and education
After stepping down, Bio moved to the United States where he lived in political asylum.
He earned a Master’s degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C., and later studied Peace Studies at the University of Bradford in the UK. During this time, he also worked as the president of a consultancy firm.
Political comeback and presidency
In 2005, Bio formally joined the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
He ran for president in 2012 but lost to incumbent Ernest Bai Koroma. He ran again in 2018 and won, becoming the 5th President of Sierra Leone.
He was re-elected in 2023, though the election was tainted by transparency concerns.
As president, Bio introduced free primary and secondary public education, abolished the death penalty, and enacted the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment law. He also launched anti-corruption efforts targeting the previous administration.
ECOWAS leadership
On Sunday, June 22, 2025, President Bio was officially appointed Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, during the bloc’s 67th Ordinary Session held in Abuja.

He succeeded Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, marking a new chapter in regional leadership for West Africa.
Family
President Bio is married to Fatima Bio, a Gambian-Sierra Leonean actress and filmmaker with roots in Nollywood.
The couple tied the knot in an interfaith wedding ceremony in London in 2013.
Fatima is a practicing Muslim, while Bio remains a devout Roman Catholic. Together, they have one child, and Bio has three other children from a previous marriage.
