At least eight people have died after a hot-air balloon carrying 21 passengers crashed in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours in the city of Praia Grande, a popular destination known for its scenic landscapes and adventure tourism. According to the Santa Catarina State Fire Department, the balloon caught fire mid-flight before plummeting to the ground.

Emergency responders rushed to the crash site shortly after receiving distress calls. Rescue efforts were hampered by difficult terrain and dense morning fog. Firefighters were able to recover the bodies of the deceased and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

“We were alerted at approximately 6:30 a.m. that a tourist balloon had lost control and crashed. Unfortunately, eight fatalities have been confirmed,” said a spokesperson for the state fire department. “Several others are being treated for burns and trauma.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims, but confirmed that both Brazilian and international tourists were aboard. The condition of the remaining 13 passengers varies, with some in critical state, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest a possible fuel malfunction, but federal aviation authorities and state investigators are conducting a full probe.

Local officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed full support for the ongoing investigations.

“This is a moment of profound sadness for our community,” said Praia Grande Mayor Joares Ponticelli. “We are working closely with emergency teams and state authorities to understand how such a tragedy occurred.”

Hot-air balloon tours are a major attraction in the region, drawing visitors eager to view the dramatic cliffs and valleys from above. Following the crash, local authorities have temporarily suspended all balloon flights pending safety inspections.
