Profile of Arnold Ekpe, Chairman designate of Dangote Sugar

Arnold Onyekwere Ekpe is a renowned Nigerian banker and business leader, widely celebrated for his transformative leadership in African finance.
With a career spanning over 30 years, he has left an indelible mark on the continent’s financial landscape, most notably through his dynamic stewardship of Ecobank, which he guided into a pan-African powerhouse.
On June 16, 2025, Ekpe will officially assume the role of Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, succeeding Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON) after nearly 20 years of visionary leadership.
This appointment signals the beginning of a new chapter for the refinery, one led by a seasoned executive renowned for driving growth, innovation, and financial inclusion.
Humble beginning
Born in August 1953 in Nigeria and partly raised in Cameroon, Arnold Onyekwere Ekpe developed a transnational outlook early in life, a perspective that would go on to define his influential, pan-African leadership style.
He attended the prestigious King’s College, Lagos, graduating in 1972, a formative experience that set the stage for his academic and professional success.
A proud alumnus of the University of Manchester, Ekpe graduated with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering as a Shell Scholar and later completed an MBA at Manchester Business School.
Arnold Ekpe’s professional journey began far from the boardrooms of banking institutions. In 1977, he started as a Wireline Logging Engineer at Schlumberger SA.
By 1979, he transitioned into corporate management at Alcan Aluminium Nigeria, where he served as Executive Assistant to the CEO, honing skills in purchasing and labor relations.
Career journey
Ekpe’s passion for finance soon led him to International Merchant Bank (IMB), an affiliate of First Chicago.

There, he progressed through several key roles, including Head of Strategy and General Manager of IMB Securities.
His banking career expanded with senior positions at First City Monument Bank and Nigeria International Bank (now Citibank Nigeria), setting the stage for his future leadership roles.
He is best known for his leadership at Ecobank, where he was Group CEO until 2012.
Under his guidance, Ecobank transformed from a regional West African bank into a major continental player operating in 35 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
His visionary approach earned him the African Banker’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, and under his leadership, Ecobank was named African Bank of the Year in 2012.
Ekpe’s focus has always extended beyond corporate success; he is a passionate advocate for financial inclusion, championing efforts to empower low-income groups, small businesses, and underserved communities as drivers of sustainable development.
Achievements
Arnold Ekpe continues to influence Africa’s financial sector through various roles, including board memberships with Opportunity International Savings and Loans Ltd, KDB Fintech (UK), Baobab Group, and the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), where he chairs audit and governance committees.
He also serves on the board of the Dangote Group, lending his expertise to one of Africa’s largest conglomerates.
Beyond his corporate accomplishments, Arnold Ekpe is deeply committed to philanthropy and mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs.
His leadership style blends innovation, inclusivity, and integrity, qualities that will undoubtedly guide Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc into its next phase of growth.
