Lesego Chombo is a renowned Botswanan politician, attorney, and former beauty pageant titleholder.

At just 26 years old, she made history in November 2024 by becoming the youngest cabinet minister in Botswana, currently serving as the Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs.

Chombo first caught the public’s eye not in a courtroom or on the campaign trail, but on stage, winning Miss Botswana in 2022 and later being crowned Miss World Africa in 2024.

Her ability to inspire and lead was evident long before her political appointment, as she gracefully balanced her roles as a beauty queen, practicing attorney, and social advocate.

Humble beginnings

Born on April 16, 1998, in the village of Shorobe in Botswana’s North-West District, Lesego Chombo is a rising star in the country’s political and legal spheres.

Growing up in Shorobe, Chombo was raised in a tight-knit, culturally vibrant community.

Despite facing economic challenges, she excelled academically and quickly emerged as a natural leader.

Her passion for social justice led her to pursue a law degree at the University of Botswana.

During her university years, she was deeply involved in student organizations and community service, which helped shape her drive to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Legal career

After graduating, Chombo began her legal journey with an internship at Baliki Corporate Law and later worked as an associate at Kebabonye Business Law.

She soon became known for her commitment to accessible legal services and community empowerment.

She also expressed interest in founding her own law firm, with a special focus on helping underserved communities navigate the legal system.

Beauty pageantry

Chombo’s advocacy for women’s rights and education was amplified through her participation in beauty pageants.

She started her journey in 2012 by winning the Queen Esther competition and later earned the Miss Women Empowerment title in 2017.

Her 2022 Miss Botswana victory and 2024 Miss World Africa crown propelled her into national and continental prominence.

Using these platforms, she highlighted developmental issues such as youth education, gender equality, and women’s empowerment across Africa.

Political career

In a significant turn of events, Chombo was nominated by President Duma Boko to Botswana’s National Assembly as a specially elected Member of Parliament on November 7, 2024.

Just four days later, she was appointed Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs. This made her the youngest individual in Botswana’s democratic history to assume a cabinet position, a record she holds with pride and purpose.

Personal life

Outside of politics and law, Chombo is an avid musician and athlete. She enjoys playing the guitar, singing, swimming, and playing baseball.

Her strong Christian faith plays a central role in her personal and professional life.

Philanthropy

Driven by a desire to give back, Chombo established a foundation that supports disadvantaged youth through educational initiatives and empowerment programs.

She also runs Law Talks, a digital platform aimed at simplifying legal concepts for the general public.
