Background

Born on August 28, 1984, in the bustling city of Lagos, Nigeria, she has transformed from a vibrant screen presence into a respected public figure, businesswoman, and advocate for culture and the arts.

Though she was born in Lagos, her roots trace back to Okene in Kogi State.

The fourth of seven children, Mercy was raised in a regimented home steered by her father, Daniel Johnson, a retired naval officer, and her late mother, Elizabeth Johnson, who passed away in 2018.

Growing up in a military household instilled in her the values of resilience, discipline, and focus, qualities that would later define her multifaceted career.

Mercy’s formative years were shaped by her family’s frequent relocations, a consequence of her father’s naval postings. She began her primary education in Calabar, Cross River State, before moving to Lagos, where she attended the Nigerian Navy Primary School.

Her secondary education took place across multiple institutions, including Rivers State Secondary School and Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt.

It was shortly after completing her secondary education that her path took a definitive turn toward the entertainment industry.

Breaking into Nollywood

Without any formal acting training, Mercy boldly auditioned for a role in a film titled ‘The Maid’.

Her performance was not only compelling but also career-defining.

It didn’t take long before she became a sought-after talent in Nollywood, starring in a string of successful titles such as Hustlers, Baby Oku in America, and War in the Palace.

By 2009, her efforts were recognized on a continental scale when she received the Best Supporting Actress award at the African Movie Academy Awards for her role in Live to Remember.

In 2013, she claimed the Best Actress award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, thanks to her dynamic performance in the comedy Dumebi the Dirty Girl.

Her immense popularity made her a household name. In both 2011 and 2012, she was Nigeria’s most searched celebrity on Google, a testament to her growing influence and fanbase.

Controversy

However, success came with its fair share of hurdles. In 2013, Mercy found herself at the center of controversy when she was temporarily banned by top Nollywood marketers for allegedly charging exorbitant fees.

She wasn’t alone, other A-list stars like Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, and Jim Iyke were also blacklisted.

The ban was lifted in March 2014 after Mercy issued a formal apology, paving the way for her return to the screen.

Political appointment

Never one to be confined to a single role, Mercy eventually moved into film production.

Her debut as a producer came with The Legend of Inikpi, a culturally rich film that showcased her dedication to telling meaningful stories rooted in African heritage.

Her transition into public service began in 2017 when she was appointed as the Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment, Arts, and Culture to then-Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

This political appointment broadened her impact, allowing her to promote and influence cultural development beyond the screen.

Transformation and health journey

In recent months, Mercy has captivated fans with her dramatic physical transformation.

On April 29, 2025, she posted a video to Instagram flaunting a significantly slimmer physique. The post ignited a social media buzz, with fans speculating about her health and lifestyle changes.

Mercy later addressed the topic, sharing that she had been actively involved in endorsing and marketing weight-loss products over the past few years, a testament to her entrepreneurial versatility.

Personal life

On August 27, 2011, Mercy married Prince Odianosen Okojie, a politician and businessman who now serves in Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
