Court finds Nasarawa United, NPFL, NFF negligent in death of footballer

The National Industrial Court has ruled that Nasarawa United Football Club of Lafia was negligent in the tragic death of one of its players, Chineme Martins.
The court also held the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the match commissioner responsible for failing to ensure the safety of the late footballer.
The verdict was confirmed by FIFPRO, the global football players’ union, which issued a statement acknowledging the court’s decision.

Chineme Martins, just 25 years old at the time, collapsed and died during a league match in March 2020 while representing Nasarawa United. His sudden death shocked the football community and raised questions about safety standards within Nigerian football.
In its judgment, the court strongly criticized the conditions under which Martins played, describing it as “reprehensible” that he was allowed to participate in the match without undergoing comprehensive medical checks. It also condemned the lack of adequate emergency medical facilities at the Lafia Township Stadium.
As part of the ruling, Nasarawa United has been ordered to compensate Martins’ family for their loss, marking a significant step toward accountability and improved safety standards in Nigerian football.
