As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has renewed its call for the protection of press freedom, emphasizing its critical role in promoting democracy, human rights, and national development.

In a statement issued on May 3, the NUJ joined media stakeholders across the globe in highlighting the importance of a free, independent, and responsible press in shaping a peaceful and progressive society.

The union noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” resonates strongly with Nigeria’s current realities, particularly in the face of ongoing security and governance challenges.

The NUJ expressed cautious optimism over what it described as improved relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media.

According to the union, there has been a noticeable decline in cases of harassment, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests of journalists—developments it described as a positive step toward strengthening press freedom and accountability.

The NUJ specifically commended the leadership of the DSS, including its Director-General, for fostering a more professional and constructive engagement with media practitioners.

It noted that the progress demonstrates that collaboration between security agencies and journalists is not only achievable but essential for building a peaceful and secure society.

Despite the improvements, the union stressed that such gains must be sustained through continuous dialogue, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law.

The NUJ reiterated that press freedom remains a constitutional right and a cornerstone for achieving broader goals such as human rights protection, economic development, and national security.

It also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to follow the example set by the DSS by respecting journalists’ rights and creating an enabling environment for media operations.

While advocating for press freedom, the NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism. The union called on its members to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, emphasizing accuracy, fairness, and accountability in reporting.

According to the statement, journalists have a crucial role to play in promoting peace and development, and must remain guided by ethical principles in carrying out their duties.

The union emphasized that the media and security institutions should not be seen as adversaries, but as partners working toward a common goal of national progress.

It called on all stakeholders, including government, security agencies, media organisations, and citizens—to renew their commitment to protecting press freedom as a vital pillar for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

The statement was signed by Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, National President of the NUJ, who reiterated the union’s readiness to engage constructively with all parties in building a safer and more inclusive media environment.
