From tech leadership to political influence: The rise of Obafemi Hamzat

on

Obafemi Hamzat is a Nigerian politician and engineer who has served as deputy governor of Lagos State since 2019.

In a major political development ahead of the next electoral cycle, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has formally endorsed him as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement was announced on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, and is seen as a significant boost to Hamzat’s growing political profile.

The backing follows a wave of support from party leaders and stakeholders across the state, coming on the heels of a series of consultations he has held in recent weeks.

Background

Born on September 19, 1964, in Lagos, Hamzat hails from a well-known political and royal lineage.

His father, Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat, served in the Lagos State House of Assembly and was Commissioner for Transportation between 1979 and 1983, later playing influential roles in regional politics.

Hamzat began his early education at Odu-Abore Memorial Primary School in Mushin before proceeding to Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo State.

He then attended the University of Ibadan, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Agricultural Engineering.

Seeking further specialization, he obtained a PhD in System Process Engineering from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom.

Professional career across sectors

Before entering public service, Hamzat built a diverse career spanning academia, finance, and information technology.

He worked in the United States with institutions such as Columbia University, and held key positions at major global financial firms including Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he joined Oando Plc, where he served as Chief Information Officer and Group Head of IT Strategy, contributing to the company’s technological growth and operational efficiency.

Entry into politics

Hamzat’s transition into politics began in 2005 when he was appointed Commissioner for Science and Technology by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He continued in the role under Babatunde Fashola, where he championed the integration of technology into government operations, improving data systems and enhancing transparency in the public service.

In 2011, he was appointed Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, a role in which he supervised key infrastructure projects and contributed to the expansion of Lagos’ road network and urban development.

He later served at the federal level as Special Adviser on Works before stepping down in 2018 to pursue his governorship ambition.

Although he withdrew from the race, he emerged as the running mate to Sanwo-Olu, a partnership that went on to win the 2019 election.

Deputy governorship

Hamzat was sworn in as deputy governor on May 29, 2019, and has since played a central role in governance within Lagos State.

Following a successful first term, he was re-elected alongside Sanwo-Olu in 2023, consolidating his influence in the state’s political structure.

Personal life

Obafemi Hamzat is happily married to Dr. Oluremi Hamzat, and they are blessed with children.

Recognition

Over the years, Hamzat has received recognition for his contributions to governance, including the Lagos State Man of the Year Award in 2013.

With his strong background in engineering, administration, and public service, combined with growing political backing, he remains a key figure in Lagos politics as attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 governorship race.
