Who is Nafiu Bala? The Lawyer turned politician and controversial ADC leader

Nafiu Bala Rabiu is a Nigerian lawyer and politician from Gombe who rose to national prominence during one of Nigeria’s most high-profile political disputes in 2025 and 2026.
He served as the Deputy National Chairman (North-East) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before declaring himself the acting National Chairman.
His claim sparked a major internal leadership crisis within the party, drawing in former Senate President David Mark
Background
Nafiu Bala Rabiu was born in Nassarawo Ward, Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe, in the early 1990s.
He grew up in a humble family in the Gombe metropolis. Bala attended Nassarawo Primary and Junior Secondary School before moving to Government Day Technical College (Vocational), Gombe, where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) in 2010.
He then enrolled at AD Rufai College for Legal and Islamic Studies in Misau, Misau, earning a Diploma in Law in 2012.
Following graduation, Bala worked mostly as a volunteer in private law firms in Gombe, gaining practical legal experience before venturing into partisan politics.
Foray into politics
Bala began his political career with the now-defunct Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), associated with former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.
He later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) around 2022, where he gained significant prominence.
In June 2022, he was affirmed as the ADC governorship candidate in Gombe State with the backing of 300 delegates.
Although he lost the election to the incumbent, his legal challenges over the results drew national attention and positioned him within the ADC’s national structure.

Rise to national leadership
Bala became the Deputy National Chairman (North-East) of the ADC, giving him a seat on the party’s National Working Committee and influence over national affairs.
The defining moment of his career came in mid-2025 during the ADC leadership crisis.
When founder Ralph Nwosu stepped down in July 2025 to allow former Senate President David Mark to lead a new coalition structure, Bala declared himself acting National Chairman.
He argued that, under the party’s constitution, the deputy chairman should assume leadership when the chairmanship is vacant.
Controversies
A resignation letter allegedly signed by Bala surfaced, but he consistently denied signing it, claiming forgery.
Despite video footage showing him present at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja during Mark’s unveiling as interim chairman, Bala pursued legal recognition as the ADC’s acting national chairman.
He filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja in September 2025. The dispute dragged into 2026, with INEC suspending recognition of rival ADC factions and delisting Mark’s executive pending court rulings.
On March 12, 2026, the Court of Appeal dismissed Mark’s jurisdictional challenge, marking a major legal win for Bala’s faction, though the substantive dispute remained unresolved.
Critics, including Ralph Nwosu and former Senator Ishaku Abbo, accused Bala of betraying agreements and undermining the party. Others alleged Bala’s faction was influenced by the ruling APC, which he firmly denied.
Personal life
Bala is based in Abuja but maintains strong ties to Gombe State. He is married, has children, and is a devout Muslim. Despite his political prominence, he comes from a humble background.
Net worth
His estimated net worth is around $800,000, reflecting earnings from his legal career, political activities, and other enterprenural ventures.
