Atiku’s son steps down as Adamawa commissioner after Gov Fintiri’s defection

Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.

His resignation comes shortly after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has stirred fresh political realignments in the state.

Fintiri reportedly picked up his APC membership card at K/Wuro Ngayandi Ward in Madagali Local Government Area, explaining that his decision came after wide consultations with stakeholders aimed at ensuring long-term stability and development for Adamawa State.

The political shift has triggered a wave of realignments within the state. Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, alongside 13 lawmakers, had earlier resigned from the PDP.

In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to Governor Fintiri, Adamu Atiku said his decision takes immediate effect.

“I write to formally tender my resignation from the office of Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, effective from today, 2nd March, 2026,” he stated.

He described his tenure as a privilege and thanked the governor for the trust and support extended to him, noting that it enabled him to contribute meaningfully to the state’s infrastructural development.

In a statement posted on his X handle, he also expressed gratitude to his parents, particularly his father, Atiku Abubakar, and his mother, Hajiya Titi Atiku Abubakar, for their moral support and prayers.

Adamu emphasised that his resignation does not signal an end to his commitment to public service but marks the beginning of a broader developmental engagement.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, reacting to Fintiri’s defection, stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC would face a tough task convincing Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

He maintained that every politician, including his children, is free to choose their political path.

The unfolding developments point to significant political recalibration in Adamawa State as preparations gradually begin ahead of 2027.
