Top 10 countries leading soyabean production globally

Soybean, popularly known as soya bean and scientifically called Glycine max, is a legume that originated from East Asia and has grown into one of the world’s most valuable agricultural crops.
Today, it is the most widely cultivated legume globally and plays a major role in feeding both humans and animals. Its importance goes beyond food, as it is also used in several industrial applications.
The crop is highly valued for its rich protein and oil content. Soybean oil is commonly used for cooking and in industrial manufacturing, while the beans themselves are processed into foods such as soy milk, tofu, edamame and tofu skin.
Fermented soybean products like soy sauce, fermented bean paste, nattō and tempeh are staples in many Asian diets.
With the rising demand for plant-based protein and processed foods, soybean has become central to global food security, leading to rapid expansion of its production across many countries.
Below are the top 10 countries currently leading soybean production worldwide.
1. Brazil
Brazil is the world’s largest producer of soybeans. The country has embraced large-scale commercial farming, making soybean one of its most important export crops.
States such as Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina are major production centres, benefiting from favourable weather, fertile land and modern farming practices.
2. United States
The United States ranks second globally in soybean production. Most soybean farming takes place in the Upper Midwest, where the crop is grown alongside corn and other grains.
American soybeans are widely used for domestic consumption and are also exported to several countries.
3. Argentina
Argentina is the third-largest soybean producer in the world.
The Pampas region accounts for most of the country’s output, with large farms relying on modern technology and improved seed varieties. Soybean exports are a major contributor to Argentina’s agricultural income.
4. China
China is one of the leading soybean producers, with most of its production concentrated in the northeastern region.

The area’s fertile black soil and suitable climate support good yields. Alongside soybeans, China also produces large quantities of rice, wheat and maize.
5. India
India ranks among the top soybean-producing countries, with Madhya Pradesh recognised as the leading producing state.
Maharashtra also contributes significantly. Soybean has become an important oilseed crop in India, supporting food processing industries and local consumption.
6. Paraguay
Despite its smaller size, Paraguay is a major soybean producer. Most of its soybeans are grown in regions such as Alto Paraná and Itapúa.
The crop is one of the country’s top agricultural exports and a key source of national revenue.
7. Canada
Canada has recorded steady growth in soybean production over the years. Ontario serves as the main production hub, where soybeans are grown for both local use and export.
Canadian agriculture also includes crops like wheat, barley and maize.
8. Ukraine
Ukraine is a leading soybean producer in Eastern Europe. Soybeans are mainly cultivated in the central and western parts of the country and harvested between August and September.
The crop strengthens Ukraine’s position as a major agricultural exporter.
9. Russia
Russia features among the top soybean producers, with farming concentrated mainly in the Far East region.
Soybeans are grown alongside cereals such as wheat, barley and oats, contributing to the country’s expanding agricultural sector.
