Tragedy as Nigerian Super Eagles star Chukwueze loses mother

The Super Eagles camp has been thrown into mourning once again following the death of winger Samuel Chukwueze’s mother, just days after team captain Wilfred Ndidi lost his father in a road accident.

The back-to-back family losses have cast a shadow over the national team, coming shortly after Nigeria secured a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

News of Chukwueze’s loss was confirmed on Thursday by his brother, David Chukwueze, who shared a series of emotional posts on Instagram announcing their mother’s passing. The messages expressed deep grief and heartbreak, drawing sympathy from fans and well-wishers.

“Can’t even post say RIP mom,” he wrote.
“My forever love just left me without saying goodbye.
“You didn’t even carry your grandchild.”

The family did not disclose the cause of death. However, sources close to the Chukwueze family revealed that the footballer’s mother had been ill for some time.

Chukwueze, who is currently on loan from AC Milan to Fulham, reportedly travelled frequently between England and Italy during the first half of the season while his mother was receiving treatment.

The 26-year-old featured for Nigeria at the recently concluded 2025 AFCON, where he came under criticism after missing a penalty in the Super Eagles’ semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco.

He has since bounced back from the disappointment, scoring for Fulham in his first match after the tournament.

Chukwueze has recorded three goals and three assists for the Premier League side so far this season.
